Welcome to "The Snake Pit" — The Smokin' Kingsnakes' official web site! I hope you'll enjoy it. It's definitely way overdue, and has been put off for way too long. I (Henrik) finally managed to get the site functional. I didn't just want it to be a site with all static content, so I felt I had to bite the bullet and do it "right". That is, an all Java based site with dynamically generated content (the magic happens on the server side), a slick and consistent style that's easy on the eye (let me know what you think of that), and an RSS feed for continuous, dynamic publishing of news and updates.

Rather than just slapping together a site as quickly as I could, I took this project as an opportunity to improve my skills with some technologies that I have previously touched on, but never really delved into. I'm a software engineer since 25 years, and the thought of having a lame site with some static pages and a few pictures just didn't appeal to me. First of all, I'm lazy. I don't want to constantly be making changes to HTML pages and worry about if they're going to mess up the layout, etc. No matter how slick the graphical design is, you're going to have to do some processing on the server side, so might as well choose a really good framework. I ended up using the excellent Spring MVC in conjunction with JSP's, XSLT, and RSS technologies.

I also wanted blogs, picture galleries, sound snippets, a members area, etc. I will continually refine the site and add more features. In the future I'd like to have a download area for recorded live shows, a store for selling CD's, etc. Since I'm a die-hard fan of Java, the site had to be entirely written in that language. So I'm proud to announce the following facts about our site:

  • 100% Microsoft free
  • 100% written in Java/JSP
  • Entirely based on Open Source frameworks
  • Exclusively developed on Linux and Open Source tools
  • Completely browser agnostic
  • No Javascript, Flash, cookies, advertisements, data mining, or other annoyances
  • The entire site is powered by Linux and Java

Read the credits section for more info about the various technologies used. Check back soon, as this is work in progress. I will add more features and content little by little. Enjoy!

/Henrik
